A Cello That Glows
First Look
Fresh off the Bench
Yes, it glows in the dark, at least if you are inclined to play that way, for the glow I’m referring to is acoustic not light. What’s the glow? It’s a full and sumptuous sound ringing with overtones that support and enhance the very forward fundamental tones. But if you want to talk light, it practically glows in that regard as well with an exceptionally clear varnish that obscures none of the beautiful grain of the wood of this cello, yet is full of seductive color.
This is the 4th of my personal model cellos I have made and it is brimming with promise. My design is meant to capture the golden trebles of the Strad Forma B and deliver the silken bass-end of a Montagnana. As usual, I have spent many hours optimizing the tone and setup. I made both Belgian and French hybrid style bridges for comparison and to allow the player to choose the quality of tone they favor: strong and soloistic or warm, rich, and woody. I’ve spent hours breaking in the cello and consequently have already fit seven progressively longer soundposts. This work stabilizes the instrument and provides the player with a brand-new cello that is already well-along the path to maturity. I’ve also experimented with a range of string options to hone in on those that work best with this particular cello and I have tried a variety of tailpieces, tailguts, and after-length tunings to optimize the tone.
All this resulted in a cello that is set to satisfy the demands of the most advanced players, perhaps edging into the terrain that would satisfy even a soloist.
