As you can see, that’s hand planes of course. Luthiers love their tools as much as any craftspeople — this luthier, so much so, that almost 20 years ago I wrote a book on making and using your own wooden hand planes. It has proved to be a useful manual to many and remained in print for all this time selling many thousands of copies. However, after selling out of the last printing, the prospect of yet again singlehandedly warehousing and handling thousands of copies felt daunting this time around. Instead, I was lucky to team up with Lost Arts Press who is now publishing the title and handling sales through their web site and at select locations on the web and at stores. They have done a beautiful job of upgrading the physical book which is now printed in hardcover with thicker, whiter paper and a durable sewn construction. May it live on and continue guiding hopeful plane users for at least another 20 years!
