Op 35 Rib-Top Viola by David Finck

Inspired by Andrea Amati’s viola from 1560, I created my own 16.5” model (371 mm string-length) for this instrument. The basic pattern has produced wonderful violas in the past for me, but I am always experimenting and trying to surpass previous achievements. This time I shortened the side width, increased the arching height, and redesigned the bass-bar to work with a smaller bridge. The effect is superb. Powerful, distinctive, woody timbre with lightening response and crystal clarity from one end of the fingerboard to the other.

The Engleman spruce top and European maple back, sides, and scroll are all select, master-grade, well-aged materials. This viola features an oil-resin treatment as part of the ground, coloring with artist oils, and my spirit-based varnish: a blend of three resins. The effect created is that of an experienced, well-loved instrument, yet with no antiquing artifice.
