I spent the past week at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking (Franklin, IN) teaching students from Arlington, VA to Monterey, CA, from a wide range of backgrounds, and at all skill levels. They were there to learn the ins and outs (more like the swirls and swoops) of carving a violin scroll.
The scroll of a violin is often taken for granted – a mere spiral at the terminus of the neck — yet it is a highly challenging carving job: from the layout to the execution; from perfecting the undulating curves of the volute to excavating the pegbox neatly and accurately. One’s aesthetic sense and technical skills are constantly being tested.
I have been teaching fundamental woodworking skills related to furniture making at craft centers and in my own studio for over three decades. I am very pleased to let the word out that I am now offering guidance on violin making as well. Contact me for more information.
