A Viola Commission

I had just completed my first go at designing and building a small viola based on “del Gesu” Guarneri’s “Cannone” violin when I got an email from a father looking for a viola for his talented daughter. They came to the studio, tried the brand new viola and loved it! But it was too small. We decided together that a commission was in order (my first) for the same model enlarged to a 16″ body length. All I asked was that they commit to waiting and trying mine before making any other purchase. I enjoyed keep them regularly apprised of my progress and they enjoyed weighing in or wood selection.

When the big day came and they again made the trip to my studio the energy and expectations were high! It took about a minute for father and daughter to get swept up in the newest viola.

“Commissioning a viola from David was a joy. I’m in love with every aspect of the instrument and was able to see it come into being.”
